[ Gearbest Technology News]Microsoft officials recently began sending emails to Windows 10 users, urging them to upgrade to Windows 11 or consider replacing with new devices. Behind this move is the urgent reality that Windows 10 will completely end technical support on October 14th – by then, more than 58.7% of the world's PCs (StatCounter data) will lose security updates, and Windows 11 has significantly raised the hardware threshold, resulting in more than 80% of Windows 10 devices unable to be upgraded.
In the email, Microsoft recommended that users complete the transition by “trade-in” or purchasing new equipment, and also provided recycling options for old equipment. Although old devices will still be able to run after October 14, vulnerability fixes and feature updates will be completely stopped, leaving them exposed to network risks for a long time.
In July 2015, Windows 10 was born as Microsoft's “unified all-platform experience” strategic product. With its return to the traditional start menu, enhanced multitasking and “Windows as a Service” (WaaS) continuous update model, it quickly became the longest-lived Windows system in history, with an installed base of more than 1.3 billion units. During its iteration process, innovations such as Windows Ink handwriting support, WSL Linux subsystem, and cross-device linkage tools have been introduced. In 2020, an update pause function was added to give users greater autonomy.
However, the release of Windows 11 in 2021 breaks this trajectory. Microsoft rarely sets hard hardware requirements such as TPM 2.0, resulting in a large number of old devices being shut out. The current market share of Windows 11 is only 38.13%, while Windows 10 still dominates, and the contradiction is highlighted.
Industry analysts believe that Microsoft's move may accelerate PC hardware iteration, but users face practical challenges such as data migration and acquisition costs. Critics point out that the forced elimination strategy ignores the sustainable use value of equipment, especially in education, enterprise and other scenarios, there are still a large number of Windows 10 devices that have not reached their end of life. Microsoft officials did not respond to the controversy, only emphasizing that “security updates are terminated at your own risk.”
