In his latest investor memorandum, Kuo wrote that Apple will purchase the CCM required for the M5 MacBook from Sunny Optical. The Chinese optical lens company will mass-produce CCM in Vietnam and provide a complete imaging system for the new laptops integrated into a compact form factor.
Currently, the camera modules of MacBook are mainly supplied by LG InnoTek and Sharp. However, Sunny Optics has unique advantages in Apple’s optical components supply chain, because only it can provide CCM and lenses in one package at the same time, enabling seamless integration. If the shipments of M5 MacBook are performing well, Kuo predicts that Sunny Optics may also become the main CCM supplier for Apple’s future iPhone and iPad models.
Meanwhile, Apple is expected to update its 14-inch MacBook Pro by the end of 2024, powered by the M4 chip. In addition, the high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are also expected to be updated by the end of 2024, equipped with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. Although no design changes have been reported in the 2024 update, Apple may launch a new MacBook based on the M5 chip in 2025 and may adopt a thinner design. This design inspiration may be derived from the ultra-thin iPad Pro launched in 2024, and Apple is working to deliver the “thintest and lightest” product in every product category.
The exact release date of the thinner MacBook Pro is not clear, but the market is widely speculated that Apple may launch a laptop based on the M5 chip and redesigned in 2025.
