It is revealed that Apple’s M6 chip uses TSMC’s 2nm process: the first touch-screen MacBook will be released in autumn

[ Gearbest Technology News]Recently, according to supply chain and industry news, Apple plans to release a new high-end laptop equipped with M6 processor in the fall of 2026. Among them, a new product internally codenamed MacBook Ultra, as the flagship model, will bring touch screen support to the Mac product line for the first time.

It is revealed that Apple’s M6 chip uses TSMC’s 2nm process: the first touch-screen MacBook will be released in autumn

It is understood that MacBook Ultra is expected to adopt a slimmer body design and be equipped with an OLED display. Its hinge structure has been redesigned to enable touch operations for the first time on a Mac. Apple has previously avoided introducing touch screens on Macs for fear of affecting iPad sales, but the latest product planning shows this strategy may change.

In terms of core technology, the M6 processor may use TSMC’s 2nm process technology. Through WMCM advanced packaging technology, the M6 chip more closely integrates components such as CPU, GPU and memory, aiming to improve overall computing performance and battery life. Apple is working closely with TSMC to improve production yield and thermal management.

In terms of network connection, Apple plans to integrate a self-developed 5G modem into the new MacBook to support continuous network connection through eSIM. This move stems from Apple's acquisition of Intel's modem business, with the goal of gradually reducing its reliance on external suppliers such as Qualcomm and optimizing software and hardware synergy.

In terms of cost, the price of the new generation of MacBook is expected to rise as the application of new technologies and strong demand for memory chips in global data centers push up component prices. Apple CEO Tim Cook has previously hinted at price adjustments for future hardware. Currently, the MacBook Air equipped with the M5 chip starts at 1,199 euros, and a price increase for the next generation of products is expected.

According to the product roadmap, the MacBook Ultra and MacBook Pro series are expected to be released first in the fall of 2026; desktop devices such as iMac and Mac mini are expected to be updated at the end of 2026; and the newly designed MacBook Air may be postponed to the spring of 2027, when a comprehensive replacement of the M6 processor product line will be completed.
