Gartner: PC shipments expected to drop 9.5% in 2022

[Gearbest News]After experiencing rapid growth in the first two years, the global PC market will usher in a “cooling off period” in 2022. Recently, market research firm Gartner predicted that global personal computer sales may drop by nearly 10% this year. In addition to the impact of the global economic downturn, the rapid development of the PC industry in the past two years has caused many people to replace their PC equipment.

According to Ranjit Atwal, senior director analyst at Gartner, economic reasons are an important reason for the decline in PC market shipments this year. “What's happening with total discretionary spending, inflation and pricing and everything else has a big impact on consumption,” he said. “While there will be people buying PCs no matter the circumstances, there will also be more people who will choose to delay their purchases for these reasons.”

In addition to economic reasons, the sales blowout in the PC industry in the past two years has also caused many consumers who plan to replace their devices to have completed the replacement of their devices, thus further suppressing the replacement demand in the current market. Gartner predicts that global PC market shipments will decline by 9.5% this year. This data only counts personal PCs, including Windows PCs, Chromebooks and Macs.

Among the above three, Chromebooks may be affected the most this year, with Gartner predicting that they will decline by up to 30% this year, while Windows PCs will decline by 3%, and Macs will remain the same as last year. From the perspective of market distribution, the decline in some markets will be more obvious, and the Eastern European and Chinese markets are expected to see double-digit declines.
