Apple's new Studio Display chip solution exposed, high-end version equipped with A19 Pro

According to code reviewed by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris, the second-generation Studio Display is equipped with an A19 chip, while the higher-end Studio Display XDR is equipped with an A19 Pro chip. Although there were rumors in the industry that the new monitor will use the A19 series chip, it was not until this firmware exposure that the details of the two chips being used in different models were confirmed.

For comparison, the first-generation Studio Display released in 2022 is equipped with the A13 Bionic chip. At that time, Apple had clearly promoted that the chip was used to support character centering functions, spatial audio, and “Hey Siri” voice wake-up. The A13 chip originally debuted with the iPhone 11 series in 2019.

The A19 and A19 Pro chips are much newer. These two chips were first launched with the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air models last year. In the new display, these chips are expected to play multiple roles: not only driving the upgraded six-speaker system (Apple claims that the bass performance is 30% better than the previous generation), but may also implement a new “desktop view” function that can simultaneously display a top view of the user's face and desktop to enhance the video conferencing experience.

It's unclear why Studio Display XDR needs to be equipped with a higher-end A19 Pro chip, but this is consistent with the model's more powerful functional positioning – including support for 120Hz refresh rate, mini-LED backlight technology and higher brightness.

More details about the internal hardware of the new Studio Display are expected to be revealed in subsequent reviews and teardowns. The two new models are currently available for pre-sale and will be officially released on March 11 (Wednesday).
