Report: iPad users more likely to keep old devices iPhone users prefer deals

[ Gearbest Technology News]According to the latest research report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), when disposing of old devices, iPad users are more likely to keep or reuse them than iPhone users.

The data, which covers the past 12 months to March 2024, reveals a remarkable phenomenon: among repeat iPad buyers, a whopping 67% choose to keep their old device or give it away to family and friends. In sharp contrast, this proportion among iPhone users is only 41%. Further observation found that about one-third of old iPad devices were given away to family members or friends, while the proportion of iPhones was only about 10%.

This data shows that even if iPads are replaced, they still maintain extremely high practical value and appeal, so that users are not eager to upgrade to new models. In contrast, iPhone users are more likely to trade in their old devices and use the second-hand market to obtain higher value. In fact, nearly half of iPhone upgraders chose to trade in their old phone, while less than 10% of iPad owners made the same choice.

Additionally, the report revealed another interesting trend: 23% of iPad upgraders said they replaced their old device due to loss, theft, or damage, compared with only 6% of iPhone owners. This further illustrates that iPad replacement is often driven by actual necessity rather than a desire to upgrade.

In terms of upgrade cycles, CIRP's data also reveals the differences between the two. About 40% of iPad owners wait three years or more before upgrading, a proportion that has been on the rise in recent years. In contrast, iPhone users upgrade more frequently and are affected by a more active second-hand market.

These trends show that the iPad continues to play an important role in the home even after being replaced by new models. The second-hand market for refurbished iPads appears to be underdeveloped compared to iPhones, perhaps because the high retention value of old iPads makes users more inclined to keep them rather than sell them.
