Specification
In May of this year, Intel shared some information about the Lunar Lake architecture and design, emphasizing that this is an architecture optimized for mobile devices that will provide faster and more efficient performance, with energy consumption 30% lower than competitors. This means that Lunar Lake will be applied to Intel’s classic U-series processor product line. The new processors are likely to be clocked at relatively low frequencies, with a focus on efficiency core optimizations. Intel also exposed the architecture configuration of the CPU, which uses Skymont as the efficiency core, while high-performance tasks are handled by the Lion Cove core.
It is reported that Lunar Lake will be equipped with the next generation graphics architecture – Battlemage Xe 2, which is a step further than the original Battlemage Xe+.
In addition, there are rumors that Intel plans to remove Hyper-Threading Technology on Lunar Lake, which has been a key feature to improve the multi-threaded performance of Intel CPUs over the past multiple generations. There should be careful considerations behind Intel’s adjustment.
In order to compete in the fanless notebook market, especially to compete with Apple’s MacBook Air, Intel may launch a version of the Lunar Lake series with a power consumption as low as 8 watts.
In terms of functions, Lunar Lake is said to be compatible with PCI-Express 5.0, Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 interfaces, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.1, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and Gigabit Ethernet, and the configuration will be fully upgraded to meet future connection needs.

Although Intel focuses on the low-power notebook market, it is reported that Lunar Lake is a very powerful chip. As the first major architectural change in many years, Lunar Lake will continue to rely on Intel’s Foveros technology to achieve stronger performance and the integration of more efficient cores. Abandoning hyper-threading has not slowed down its pace. Early data shows that at similar power consumption levels, Lunar Lake’s performance can be almost 1.5 times that of Meteor Lake processors. Although this is only based on Cinebench multi-thread testing and is not a comprehensive performance evaluation, it still shows its potential.
There are rumors that Lunar Lake can improve performance by up to 50% compared to existing Meteor Lake processors. This may be an exaggeration, and many people have reservations about this. In addition, there is news that Lunar Lake’s integrated GPU performance is twice that of Meteor Lake at a higher thermal design power (TDP).
Intel claims that Lunar Lake is 30% more efficient than AMD’s low-power 7000 series CPUs (such as the 7840U), or 20% more efficient than Snapdragon X Elite.
Intel plans to use new process nodes to further improve performance or efficiency, but instead of using its own process, it will use TSMC’s 3nm 3NB technology.
AI performance is another highlight of Lunar Lake. Intel announced that in May 2024, Lunar Lake’s new neural processor will reach 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This rivals the NPU in the Snapdragon X Elite, but Intel’s ambitions don’t stop there. Lunar Lake’s Xe 2 GPU can also handle up to 60 trillion operations per second, enabling the entire chip’s performance to exceed the 100 TOPS mark.
From a graphics processing perspective, initial feedback on Lunar Lake has been positive. Leaked SiSoftware benchmark results show that the Battlemage architecture surpasses Meteor Lake in performance with lower power consumption and fewer Xe cores. Intel’s latest statement claims that its graphics processing capabilities are 50% faster than previous generations of integrated graphics cards.
Mass production issues
There is news that Lunar Lake is expected to be released together with the desktop version of Arrow Lake at the end of 2024. This release schedule may seem tight, but considering Intel has already demonstrated working chip samples at recent trade shows, it’s not entirely impossible. It is said that Lunar Lake will mainly target Intel’s low-end and energy-saving notebook design market, especially for light gaming purposes.
As for Arrow Lake, it will be used in higher-end mobile devices and desktop computers. However, if Lunar Lake is indeed released at the same time as Arrow Lake, the initial supply may be limited, and mass production is expected to wait until early 2025.
