AMD’s next generation computer processor has been renamed! Changed to “Ryzen AI 300 Series”

[ Gearbest Technology News]AMD announced its next-generation Ryzen laptop processors for generative AI workloads at Computex 2024: the Ryzen AI 300 series. This is a rebranding of its top-tier Ryzen 9 chip to highlight the processor’s AI features. The new naming still retains the “HX” suffix that AMD introduced in 2022, but it does not indicate how many watts of power the chip consumes. Instead, HX will simply refer to the “top of the stack” or the best and fastest Ryzen AI 300 chip.

The new Ryzen AI chips are based on AMD’s latest neural, integrated graphics and general-purpose processing architecture: XDNA2 for the NPU, RDNA 3.5 for the iGPU (now with up to 16 computing units), and Zen 5 for the CPU. The first two processors in the series are the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and Ryzen AI 9 365. Both processors have 50 TOPS NPUs, but the HX version is the higher-end of the two.

The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 is a 12-core/24-thread chip with a maximum clock speed of 5.1GHz, 36MB cache, and Radeon 890M graphics. The Ryzen AI 9 365 is a 10-core/12-thread chip with a maximum clock speed of 5.0GHz, a 34MB cache, and Radeon 880M graphics.

The Ryzen AI 9 300 series also seems to have the most TOPS compared to other NPU configuration chips that are already on the market or will soon be available. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series has 45 TOPS, Apple’s M4 has 38 TOPS, and AMD’s previous generation Ryzen 8040 series chips only have 16 TOPS. Intel’s Meteor Lake Ultra 7 165H has about 10 TOPS (but the upcoming Lunar Lake is said to be even better).

AMD claims that its XDNA2 NPU is five times more computationally powerful and twice as energy efficient as the previous generation, thanks to its unique FP16 “block” or NPU architecture that can handle 8-bit performance (INT8) and 16-bit precision (FP16) without quantization for generative AI workloads.

Starting in July 2024, Ryzen AI 300 will appear on some of the Copilot Plus PCs (laptops) announced at Microsoft’s recent Surface event: the Asus Vivobook S 15 and HP OmniBook. Other AI laptops include MSI’s Stealth A16, Summit A16, Prestige A16, and Creator A16; Asus’ Zenbook S 16, Vivobook S 14 and 16, and ProArt P16/X13, as well as Rog Zephyrus G16 and Tuf A14/A16 gaming laptops; and more ThinkBook, ThinkPad, and Yoga notebooks from Lenovo.
