US media: Apple’s golden era in China ends, iPhone’s appeal plummets

[Gearbest Technology News]Apple has dominated China’s high-end smartphone market for many years. No company can make a phone that rivals the performance of the iPhone or is considered a status symbol by wealthy, cosmopolitan shoppers. Especially in the Chinese market, iPhone is widely recognized. But now, evidence is mounting that the iPhone is no longer as attractive to many Chinese as it once was.

US media: Apple’s golden era in China ends, iPhone’s appeal plummets

Data released by smartphone research company Counterpoint Research shows that iPhone sales fell 24% year-on-year in the first six weeks of this year. By comparison, Huawei's phone sales, Apple's long-time rival in China, soared 64%.

Over the past decade, China has been the iPhone's most important market after the United States, accounting for about 20% of Apple's sales. Now, Apple's dominance of China's mobile phone market may be undermined by a combination of factors: slowing consumer spending and the resurgence of Huawei.

“Apple's golden era in China is over,” said Linda Sui, senior director at market research firm TechInsights. “This is not just a consumer issue, it's about the overall situation.”

“Five years ago, Apple's brand influence in China was still very strong. People would wait all night with tents outside Apple stores to welcome the launch of a new generation of mobile phones,” said Zhong Xiaolei, an analyst at market research company Canalys in Shanghai. “However, the launch of the iPhone 15 was far less popular.”

However, Apple has also been working hard to solve the difficulties in the Chinese market recently. Last week, Apple CEO Cook came to China and attended the grand opening ceremony of an Apple store near Jing'an Temple in Shanghai. At the same time, he met with BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu and other partners.
