Take action yourself! Intel CEO visits Taiwan to resolve chip supply issues

[Gearbest News]Intel has spared no effort to solve the chip supply problem. According to Taiwanese media, yesterday, Intel CEO Kissinger left for Asia to visit customers and suppliers, hoping to find more solutions to chip foundry and raw material supply issues.

It is reported that after Intel CEO Kissinger arrived in Taiwan, he first visited TSMC to discuss issues related to chip foundry. Gelsinger hopes to gain more production capacity from TSMC, including the current advanced 6-nanometer and 5-nanometer process production capacity, while increasing subsequent foundry orders for 3-nanometer CPUs based on demand, and exploring all-round cooperation with more advanced 2-nanometer processes and even supporting mature processes.

At the same time, in order to cope with the current growing demand for chip ABF carrier board area, Gelsinger will also meet with senior executives of Xinxing Electronics, a major carrier board manufacturer, hoping that Xinxing can increase the supply of ABF carrier boards. According to data, Xinxing’s orders are full from 2027 to 2030. This personal visit by Intel CEO also highlights the extent to which the industry is scrambling for ABF carrier boards.

In addition to Intel, Apple is also a major customer of Xinxing ABF. Apple recently launched the new M1 Ultra processor, which requires an exponential increase in the amount of ABF carrier boards, making Xinxing's production capacity in short supply. Intel's entry into the scramble for raw materials, along with other customer demands, has made supplies even tighter.

Industry sources pointed out that Intel has limited suppliers of high-end carrier boards that can cooperate with heterogeneous integration and even advanced packaging, and only Xinxing can supply them that can cooperate with TSMC's production capacity. If Intel successfully obtains TSMC's production capacity, it will be difficult for an ingenious person to make a meal without the supply of ABF substrates from Sunstar. Therefore, it is not surprising that Kissinger met with Sunstar's senior management.

In recent years, chip carrier boards have received increasing attention due to the shortage of upstream and downstream chip production capacity. In particular, large manufacturers with stable and abundant ABF carrier board production capacity have become the target of competition among major chip manufacturers, which has also driven the substantial growth in the output value of carrier boards in the past three years.
