[Gearbest Technology News]After experiencing the “cabbage price” of solid-state drives (SSDs) in the past two years, today’s SSDs may usher in a new round of price increase cycle.
According to a report by Nikkei Chinese, the bulk transaction price of solid-state drives from January to March was 10% higher than the previous quarter, rising for two consecutive quarters. Memory manufacturers that have reduced supply have proposed price increases in order to improve profits, and the demand side has accepted this request. There is also a trend of purchasing SSDs in advance due to rising prices.
Judging from the bulk transaction prices from January to March, 256GB capacity TLC (triple-layer unit) products are about US$28.5 (approximately 206 yuan) each, which is 12% higher than the previous quarter. The larger 512GB product rose 10% to about $53.5 (about 387 yuan) each. Both products have risen for two consecutive quarters. The increase has expanded compared with the 9% from October to December 2023.
Affected by the previous market downturn, large memory manufacturers as sellers have reduced production of NAND flash memory, the main component, and have also reduced the supply of SSDs. As signs of excess inventory in the supply chain recede, prices will turn higher from October to December 2023. Large memory manufacturers said they still plan to increase prices in the future. Some relevant company executives pointed out, “Compared with around the summer of 2021 before the price reduction, the price level is still quite cheap. Memory manufacturers also need to continue to improve profits.”
After the previous earthquake in Taiwan, industry sources revealed that the three major memory manufacturers – Micron, SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics – have successively announced the suspension of quotations to wait and see the potential impact of the earthquake on production capacity supply. This move has attracted widespread attention in the industry, and the industry generally believes that this may be a precursor to memory price increases.
