[ Gearbest Technology News]Samsung seems to be developing a scalable/folding laptop after foldable phones. According to a patent application found by foreign media 91mobiles on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), this laptop looks similar to a regular laptop, with a screen and keyboard on the front, but what’s special is that its expandable screen can be expanded like a scroll.
This patent was filed as early as June 1, 2020 and was published on July 16, 2024. However, considering that a patent for a similar design was filed in December 2018, the new product looks like an improved version. In 2019, the design was published publicly by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO).
Samsung appears to be working on a newly designed laptop with an expandable screen. This will be another application of its flexible screen technology. According to the patent description, there is a regular screen in front of the notebook, but there are two screens/panels that can be expanded from the left and right sides. After use, you can collapse these screens.
When fully expanded, this notebook will provide an ultra-wide aspect ratio, allowing more content to be displayed on the screen. Patented images show that the new version appears to have curved edges compared to the previous flat panel. These images also indicate that the two screens on the left and right sides will be secured by some kind of hinge mechanism. This mechanism allows the screen to be fixed at certain angles, such as fully open or half open like a book.
Since this is only the patent stage, very little is known about the exposure of hardware at present. It is not yet known whether the products in the patent stage will become commercialized actual products, or whether they will be displayed only as prototypes for technology display at the science and technology exhibition. But anyway, the future looks full of exciting possibilities.
This scalable/folding laptop is not only a technological breakthrough, but may also change people’s usage habits. The screen size of traditional laptops is fixed, while the screen of this new laptop can be adjusted according to needs to provide a more flexible user experience. For example, users can expand the screen when multitasking is required to obtain more display space, while keeping the screen folded and saving space when only simple operations are required.
