[ Gearbest Technology News]According to a new report by The Information, Nvidia has revealed to some of its partners that the original Blackwell GPU release plan will be postponed and the current target is set at the beginning of 2025. Although it is unexpected to postpone the release, the reason behind it – design flaws, is even more worrying.
It is reported that this batch of chips may face a delay of more than three months. Nvidia is customizing B100 and B200 chips for global technology giants such as Meta, Google, and Microsoft. This delay undoubtedly has brought considerable impact on these giants.
The investigation and correction of design defects cannot be achieved overnight, which directly leads to serious delays. Blackwell’s main shipment plans may be postponed to the first quarter of 2025, according to people familiar with the matter. However, Nvidia’s attitude towards this is vague, saying that it is only “probably increased production” at the end of 2024, but combined with the current time node, this is more like an indirect confirmation of the release in early 2025.
As of now, the delay seems to only affect Nvidia’s enterprise-class GPUs, devices that play AI acceleration role in data centers. But it is not difficult to speculate that Blackwell’s consumer version may also encounter the same fate, especially considering the rumors that the RTX 50 series will be delayed.
It is worth noting that although Nvidia’s consumer-grade GPU will not directly use the same chip for AI graphics cards worth $70,000, the overall architecture of Blackwell is applicable to both. Therefore, the severity of the design defects will directly determine the fate of the RTX 50 series. At present, it has been revealed that the RTX 50 series may also be postponed to launch in 2025, which may be a direct reflection of the impact of design defects.
