[ Gearbest Technology News]Recently, an unexpected situation encountered by an RTX 5070 user has plunged Nvidia's Blackwell architecture graphics card into controversy. At the moment of booting, the graphics card power cord melted. Although the number of similar cases is extremely small, it exposes a potential design flaw that could affect the entire RTX 50 series, even lower-power models.
The protagonist of the event is the combination of Zotac RTX 5070 and 750W Seasonic power supply. User ere9w's records show that just a few seconds after booting, thick smoke came out of the graphics card's 12V dual-row 6-pin power supply interface and the power cord was burned. This is highly similar to the previous failure mode of the RTX 4090 series. Nvidia once blamed the 4090 problem on improper cable installation, but eventually admitted that it needed to improve the power supply interface design.
User ere9w further checked and found that the pins of the graphics card power supply interface were obviously damaged. Many players pointed out that this interface design itself has manufacturing defects – if the pin position is slightly misaligned, it may lead to poor contact. Users emphasized that correct installation of wires is the foundation, but design flaws are the fundamental problem.
This incident echoes the analysis of hardware reviewer Der8auer. He used thermal imaging technology to detect the melted RTX 5090 graphics card and found that the power supply line had uneven current distribution. Because the 12V double-row 6-pin design lacks a monitoring mechanism for the power consumption of each pin, some lines are overloaded and eventually cause overheating and meltdown. Even more worryingly, the flaw appears to have spread to the RTX 5070 and 5080, not just the power-hungry 5090.
The current price of RTX 50 series graphics cards generally exceeds US$500. If a user encounters a malfunction and is denied warranty due to “man-made damage”, he or she will face huge financial losses. Previous power supply issues with the RTX 40 series drove interface improvements, but new faults with the 50 series show that Nvidia still has unresolved problems in the design of the Blackwell architecture.
