[Gearbest Technology News]According to Korean media Greened.kr, Samsung Electronics won the competition with SK Hynix and Micron and successfully became the GDDR7 video memory supplier for Nvidia’s next-generation GeForce RTX 50 “Blackwell” graphics card. The news marks a major win for Samsung in the high-end graphics memory market.
Samsung is one of the first three major manufacturers in the world to launch GDDR7 memory. Its competitors include SK Hynix and Micron. Although Micron dominated the RTX 30 and RTX 40 series with its widely used GDDR5X and GDDR6X memory, Nvidia has selected Samsung’s GDDR7 solution for the upcoming RTX 50 series.
Reports indicate that Samsung won this order due to its strong performance in early testing of both its memory products and Nvidia’s new graphics cards. Samsung’s GDDR7 products stand out for their performance and stability, giving them priority status. This partnership includes both desktop and laptop RTX 50 graphics cards. While other suppliers may provide GDDR7 memory for laptops, Samsung remains the primary partner.
Nvidia will use GDDR7 memory at speeds of 28 Gbps and 32 Gbps in its RTX 50 series graphics cards. The flagship RTX 5080 will feature 32 Gbps memory, while other models may opt for the 28 Gbps version. Even the 28 Gbps option offers a significant performance boost for the RTX 5090, with memory bandwidth reaching 1792 GB/s—an increase of 78% compared to the RTX 4090’s 1008 GB/s.
Because the RTX 5090 uses a wider 512-bit memory interface, it requires more memory chips. This could explain why Nvidia chose not to use 32 Gbps memory for it, as it may increase power consumption.
Nvidia is expected to reveal the RTX 50 series at the 2025 CES show, with the first products available in January 2025.
