[ Gearbest Technology News]In 2024 and early 2025, Apple has updated all its Mac product lines with the new generation of M4 chips, but Mac Pro has not been updated yet. Currently, the Mac Pro is still waiting for an upgrade, and rumors say it will usher in a major upgrade later this year.
In terms of chips, according to the revelations, the current Mac Pro can be equipped with the M2 Ultra chip released by Apple in June 2023. According to common sense, Mac Pro should be upgraded to the M4 Ultra chip, but this may not be the case. Earlier this month, Apple updated its Mac Studio, launching a version equipped with the M4 Max chip and the M3 Ultra chip, but it did not release the M4 Ultra chip. Apple revealed to Mac Studio reviewers that not every generation of M-series chips will include a high-end “Ultra” version, so the M4 Ultra chip may not exist at all.
Regarding what kind of chip will be equipped with Mac Pro, there are the following possibilities: First, Apple does have an M4 Ultra chip, but it is not ready yet; Second, Apple may launch a high-end M4 chip, but it is not an “Ultra” chip, but is named “M4 Extreme” and other names such as “M4 Extreme”. Third, Mac Pro will continue to use M3 Ultra chip; Fourth, Mac Pro will be directly upgraded to M5 Ultra chip.
Previously, Apple released the M1 Ultra, M2 Ultra and M3 Ultra chips essentially connect the two Max chips together through the “UltraFusion” connector. While the M4 Max chip currently does not have an UltraFusion connector, the first possibility seems unreasonable. Apple may develop a standalone M4 Ultra or Extreme chip instead of a double variant of the M4 Max chip. But according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple does not intend to develop the M4 Ultra chip from scratch due to costs, production challenges and low sales of high-end and expensive models.
Apple can also update the Mac Pro to the same M3 Ultra chip as Mac Studio, but if that’s Apple’s plan, it’s likely that it’s already updated the Mac Pro this month with Mac Studio. The Mac Pro update may be delayed for other development reasons, but there are currently no rumors about it being released significantly new features.
Later this year, we may welcome the first Macs equipped with M5 chips, but it may also be until early 2026. Even if Mac computers equipped with M5 chips are really released at the end of 2025, there is no guarantee that the M5 Ultra chip will be launched simultaneously. At present, it is still unclear which Apple chip will be equipped with the new Mac Pro.
In terms of design, there are currently no rumors about the Mac Pro design update, which shows that Apple does not seem to have any intention of making appearance adjustments to it.
In terms of interfaces, Apple has added Thunderbolt 5 interfaces to Mac Studio and MacBook Pro, so the Mac Pro is likely to be equipped with Thunderbolt 5 interfaces. The Thunderbolt 5 interface will enable the Mac Pro to connect to more high-resolution monitors.
In terms of memory and solid-state drives, the M3 Ultra chip supports up to 512GB of memory. If the Mac Pro is equipped with M3 Ultra or similar chips, its memory support will be greatly improved, while the current model only supports 192GB. Storage capacity will also double as the M3 Ultra supports up to 16TB of SSDs, while the Mac Pro currently only supports 8TB.
In terms of release date, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said last year that the Mac Pro will usher in an update by the end of 2025, but given the uncertainty over chips, Apple may postpone it until 2026.
