Microsoft issues ultimatum warning Windows 8.1 users to upgrade as soon as possible

Unlike Windows 7, Microsoft does not provide a free upgrade channel from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10/Windows 11. The only way is to change the device.

According to Microsoft, users who insist on using Windows 8.1 should consider purchasing a device that supports Windows 10 or Windows 11. The reason why they cannot upgrade is because the Windows 8.1 system was designed in 10 years and does not match the current system architecture at all.

Microsoft released Windows 8.1 on October 17, 2013, in an attempt to repair and improve the Windows 8 system. Windows 8.1 brings back the traditional Start button, as well as the option to boot directly to the desktop instead of a complete redesign of the Start menu interface. Windows 8.1 also includes Internet Explorer 11 (RIP), improved integration with OneDrive, and other tweaks.

Interestingly, Windows 8.1 is the only major Windows update that Microsoft allows users to download from the Microsoft Store, similar to how Apple updates macOS.

On January 9, 2018, Windows 8.1 ended mainstream support. Unlike its predecessors, Windows 8.1 does not support the Extended Security Update Program, which means that commercial companies cannot pay for update patch services provided by Microsoft after January 10, 2023.
