In a research note this week with Hong Kong investment firm Haitong International Securities, Jeff Pu added that the A18 Pro chip will feature a 6-core GPU, on par with the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro models.

It is rumored that iOS 18 will provide new generative AI capabilities for a range of iPhone features and applications, including Siri, Spotlight, Apple Music, Health, Messages, Numbers, Pages, Keynote, Shortcuts, etc. Apple has reportedly considered partnering with companies such as Google, OpenAI and Baidu to implement at least some of these features.

It is rumored that iPhone 16 Pro models will be equipped with an upgraded neural engine with a “significant” increase in core count, which may make some of iOS 18's generative artificial intelligence features unique to these models. Pu has previously said that the larger chip size will be related to the neural engine, which can power generative AI functions on the device.

Starting from the iPhone 12 series, Apple has used a 16-core neural engine. However, even if the core count remains unchanged, Apple is still improving the performance of the Neural Engine year by year. For example, Apple says the A17 Pro chip's Neural Engine is 2x faster than the iPhone 14 Pro's A16 Bionic chip.

As for the GPU, for reference, the iPhone 15 Pro with the A17 Pro chip has significantly improved graphics processing capabilities compared to previous models. Pu believes that Apple will stick to a 6-core GPU on the A18 Pro chip, so graphics improvements in this year’s iPhone 16 Pro models may be limited.
