Intel processor architecture welcomes huge changes, AI boosts performance to another level

Meteor Lake adopts a separated module architecture, dividing the processor into computing module, IO module, SoC module and graphics module. Each module is connected through Foveros 3D packaging technology to achieve architectural innovation. The computing module uses Intel 4 process, the IO module integrates Thunderbolt 4 and PCIe 5.0, and the NPU integrated in the SoC module will accelerate AI calculations.

Meteor Lake adopts a 3D high-performance hybrid architecture, which is composed of performance cores, energy efficiency cores and low-power energy efficiency cores. Through separate modular design, it supports different process standards and further improves performance and power efficiency. In addition, Meteor Lake will be Intel’s first chip using the Intel 4 process. Intel 4 has a process library area that is 2 times smaller than that of the previous generation, and simplifies the production process through EUV extreme ultraviolet lithography.

In the Meteor Lake processor, the NPU for artificial intelligence acceleration is introduced for the first time, which is designed to bring high-energy and low-consumption performance for continuous AI and AI offloading (reducing the AI ​​workload of the CPU and GPU through the NPU). In addition to NPU, low-latency and high-response CPUs and high-performance and high-throughput GPUs also bear the demand for AI computing power. NPU, CPU and GPU collaborate with each other to continuously accelerate AI scenarios on PC.

The introduction of artificial intelligence-accelerated NPU means that Intel hopes to accelerate the application of AI on PCs through Meteor Lake. And Intel also showed us a case in which Intel also worked with ByteDance video editing app – Jianying to optimize the “smart keying” function that users use frequently. This means that under the Meteor Lake architecture, the CPU and GPU can be released simultaneously to meet the computing power needs of users in complex scenes, helping users obtain a smoother editing experience.
