According to the latest report released by Canalys on September 27, 2024, Huawei’s tablet shipments soared to 20.5 million units in the second quarter, positioning the company ahead of Apple in the highly competitive tablet market. This surge in shipments highlights the growing dominance of Huawei in the mainland China tablet market, with both companies each reaching approximately 20 million units shipped. Tablet Market Performance in Mainland China
The personal computing device market in mainland China, including desktops, notebooks, and workstations, experienced a 6% year-on-year decline, totaling 9.1 million units shipped in Q2 2024. This dip is largely attributed to sluggish market demand. However, the tablet sector bucked the trend, posting a 20% year-on-year growth, with 7.8 million units sold in the second quarter. Huawei Leads in Tablet Shipments
In the mainland China tablet market, Huawei and Apple were neck and neck, both achieving market shares of 26%. Despite both companies shipping around 20 million units, Huawei’s impressive 66% year-on-year growth set it apart, while Apple saw a 24% decline in shipments.
Xiaomi ranked third with 9.25 million units shipped, capturing 12% of the market share and posting a 24% annual growth. Honor and Lenovo rounded out the top five tablet brands, shipping 6.52 million and 4.92 million units, respectively. Notably, all the top five tablet brands, except for Apple, saw positive annual growth in shipments.
Desktop and Laptop Market Trends
In the desktop and laptop sectors, Lenovo remained the leader with 30.71 million units shipped in Q2 2024, accounting for 34% of the market share. However, Lenovo faced a 12% annual decline in shipments. Huawei ranked second with 11.58 million units shipped, marking a 30% annual growth and capturing a 13% market share. HP followed with 8.17 million units, holding an 8% market share but facing a 16% decline in shipments. Among the top five brands, only Huawei and Asus saw positive growth in shipments.
Future Outlook for Tablets and PCs
Canalys forecasts that the tablet market in mainland China will continue to thrive, with a projected 9% growth in 2024. In contrast, the PC market is expected to experience a 4% decline. The report also predicts a reversal in 2025, with PC shipments expected to grow by 12%, while tablet shipments are anticipated to maintain moderate growth, reaching 1% in the same period.
