[Gearbest News]According to the latest data released by Counterpoint, global PC shipments in the second quarter of 2023 fell 15% year-on-year, but increased 8% month-on-month.
While inventory levels continued to normalize in the second quarter, they fell by double digits year-on-year again following a 28% year-on-year decline in the first quarter. However, the second quarter was the first quarter-on-quarter growth since the first quarter of 2022. Shipments in the second quarter can be seen as an early sign of stabilization in the PC market. Due to the lack of stable growth momentum, Counterpoint expects a mild recovery in the second half of 2023.
Global PC shipments
Except for HP and Apple, other manufacturers' shipments saw double-digit declines.
Lenovo maintained its solid position as the top shipment player in the second quarter, but the company posted an 18% year-over-year decline due to continued weak demand in some markets.
HP's 22% market share was its highest since the second quarter of 2021, while its Flex shipments benefited from early inventory adjustments and incremental Chromebook orders.
Dell's shipments increased sequentially this quarter, but fell double digits year-on-year due to weak overall demand.
Apple's shipments saw a high single-digit increase compared to last year. This increase was mainly due to relatively low shipments in the second quarter of 2022 and the launch of new products.
However, although the global PC market shipments saw their first month-on-month growth since the first quarter of 2022 in the second quarter, according to data from the Counterpoint Macro Index Tracker, the market may have to experience some turbulence in the second half of this year before it can see the light of day. In the second half of 2023, the back-to-school momentum will boost sales, and AI-enabled laptops and Arm laptops may be launched. Overall, the market is getting out of the doldrums and ushering in a new normal after the epidemic.
Counterpoint is cautiously optimistic about the shipment performance in the second half of the year, and expects shipments to continue to decline year-on-year in the next few quarters before growing.
