Give up on Intel completely? All Apple computer products are equipped with self-developed chips

[Gearbest News]At Apple’s WWDC23 held early this morning, in addition to the much-anticipated new head-mounted display device Vision Pro, Apple also brought three new computers: 15-inch MacBook Air, Mac Studio and Mac Pro. Without exception, all three are equipped with Apple's self-developed M series processors, which also means that Apple's “CPU self-developed switching” strategic mission has been fully completed.

At this WWDC, Apple’s Director of Engineering and Project Management showed off the M2 Ultra. According to his introduction, the overall performance of the new processor is three times faster than the Mac Pro equipped with Intel processor. It can be called a “chip monster”. According to reports, M2 Ultra is composed of two M2 Max chips combined through the UltraFusion interface. It has 134 billion transistors, which is 17.5% higher than the previous generation M1 Ultra. It also integrates 24 CPU cores and up to 76 GPU cores. It is the most powerful chip ever designed for personal computers.

In 2020, Apple launched its first self-developed chip M1. At that time, the stock price of Intel, a former Apple Mac series computer chip supplier, fell sharply. Last year, Intel executives also expressed their hope to continue cooperating with Apple. However, at present, it seems that relevant cooperation is unlikely to be restarted. On the one hand, Apple's M-series chips are mainly built based on ARM's chip architecture, which is quite different from Intel's X86 architecture. Based on ARM architecture, software development can be more unified, thereby creating a better ecosystem. On the other hand, from a performance perspective, the M series chips are not weaker than Intel's Core series, and are even better in terms of energy consumption. In addition, although the initial investment in self-research is huge, once it is promoted and used on a large scale, it will have a certain cost advantage compared to outsourced chips.

Based on the above aspects, it seems difficult for Apple to install Intel processors in future computer products, and this Mac Pro also announced this. Therefore, when Apple officially released its new product, Intel's stock price fell by 4%, which is also a normal reaction of the market.
