Foreign media: Apple will update at least three Macs this year to upgrade to M4 chips

MacBook Pro

Apple plans to update the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models and upgrade to the M4 chip. The last update of the MacBook Pro series was in October 2023, and these devices are updated annually.

Apple abandoned the 13-inch MacBook Pro last year and now launches an entry-level 14-inch model that will be powered by the standard M4 chip used in the iPad Pro. Mid- and high-end 14-inch models will be equipped with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, and so will the 16-inch models. M4 chips are made using a 3nm process, but their performance, efficiency and AI capabilities are improved compared to M3 chips.

This year’s MacBook Pro models are not expected to have design updates, and Apple will focus on internal improvements. Specifically, the M4 chip will be the highlight of the upgrade, and Apple aims to get the same M4 chip series throughout its Mac product lineup in 2024 and 2025.

Mac mini

Unlike the MacBook Pro, Apple does plan to design updates to the Mac mini. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the Mac mini will be Apple’s smallest computer to date, even smaller than the previous generation.

It is expected to be about the same size as the Apple TV, but will be thicker than the Apple TV and the current Mac mini, which is 1.4 inches. The machine will continue to be made of aluminum, but the overall size is smaller.

Apple plans to use the M4 and M4 Pro chips in Mac mini models, which should bring significant performance gains.

iMac

The 24-inch iMac is expected to be updated this year, from the M3 chip to the M4 chip. It is rumored that the design of the iMac has not changed, so we expect to see the same 24-inch display, and come in a variety of colors to choose from.

Apple is still exploring an iMac with a larger display (about 30 inches), but it is not expected to launch an iMac with a larger display in 2024, and it is unclear whether it will be launched in 2025.

Possible release time
