[Gearbest News]According to Gearbest, the latest report released by the data agency Canalys pointed out that the termination of Windows 10 service will cause 240 million computers to become electronic waste.
Canalys said that the end of Windows 10 service may cause hundreds of millions of PCs to lose the opportunity for secondary use, putting them at risk of being discarded into landfills. As many as 57% of partners expect the end of Windows 10 service to affect customers' update plans in 2024, with one-third of PCs expected to be updated in the next two years.
Canalys predicts that the PC market will return to 8% growth in 2024, driven by trends such as AI PC. Newer PCs with Windows 11 pre-installed will also drive growth. However, many of the devices in use do not meet the hardware requirements required by Microsoft's latest operating system, preventing channels from refurbishing these PCs and starting their “second life.”
According to Canalys statistics, in the nearly two years before Microsoft announced the official end of support for Windows 10 (October 14, 2025), about one-fifth of the devices, about 240 million units, would become electronic waste due to incompatibility with the Windows 11 operating system. If these devices were all foldable laptops, stacked vertically upward, the height would exceed 600 kilometers above the moon.
Canalys analysis said that most of these 240 million PCs could at least be recycled if they were in good condition, but because they are not compatible with the latest supported versions of Windows, their refurbished and resale value would be significantly reduced. It is reported that 39% of partners have the ability to refurbish and resell second-hand equipment.
Canalys believes that for the e-waste problem that has long worried the technology industry, manufacturers have the responsibility to maximize the service life of equipment, and cross-industry cooperation may be the only solution.
