Apple’s M4 chip is expected to fully cover the Mac product line next year, a historic update

[ Gearbest Technology News]Apple seems to be about to achieve a feat not seen in more than a decade – using a single generation of chips to completely refresh its Mac product line for the first time. Although it has been more than four years since the M1 chip was launched, Apple has never completed an update of the entire product line at once. When the M1 chip was released, the Mac Pro was not included in the update, and the iteration of the M2 chip omitted the iMac. This strategy of batch updates is not new for Apple, and has been seen even before the advent of M-series chips.

In the past, Apple has used Intel’s latest SoC to update many Mac models, but the iMac Pro and Mac mini were not included. The last truly unified update of the Mac product line dates back to 2013’s “trash can” Mac Pro. Therefore, if the rumors about the M4 chip are true, this will undoubtedly be a historic moment for Apple and its Mac users.

According to Mark Gurman, Apple will introduce the M4 chip into MacBook Air, Mac Studio and Mac Pro by mid-2025 to achieve full unification of the product line. So far, Apple has updated the MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini, bringing a number of eye-catching upgrades, including adding faster Thunderbolt ports, providing nano-texture display options, and improving the Center Stage camera.

The core highlight of the new product lies in the performance leap brought by the M4 chip. Taking the MacBook Pro as an example, the M4 chip is 1.8 times faster than the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro in gigapixel photo editing, and rendering complex scenes in Blender is 3.4 times faster. In addition, the M4 chip is also equipped with a 16-core neural engine, which runs three times as fast as the M1.

As for the more powerful M4 Pro chip, it has achieved significant improvements in both single-core and multi-core performance. The Mac mini with M4 Pro is now the fastest desktop Mac Apple has ever offered, with CPU performance even surpassing that of the M2 Ultra.
