[Gearbest News]The blood oxygen function may be disabled on new Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 models purchased in the United States, but on these watches purchased before the International Trade Commission (ITC) issued a ban on these models, the blood oxygen function may be disabled. Functionality still works. Older Apple Watches before Apple Watch 6 also included blood oxygen functionality (excluding SE models).
Blood oxygen function measures the saturation of oxygen in a person's red blood cells. Normal readings are between 95% and 100%. If the reading is below 92%, it indicates a lack of oxygen.
Masimo CEO Joe Kiani, who filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple that resulted in an injunction from the U.S. International Trade Commission, recently said consumers should avoid using the blood oxygen feature on the Apple Watch. Still, the feature saved the life of a passenger on a Ryanair flight from Birmingham, England, to Verona, Italy a few weeks ago. The passenger, a woman in her 70s, experienced shortness of breath and the crew began searching for a doctor on the plane.
Luckily there was National Health Service (NHS) doctor Rashid Riaz on board, who was told the woman had a heart condition. Dr. Riaz asked the crew to borrow an Apple Watch. Dr. Riaz said: “The Apple Watch helped me find that the patient's blood oxygen saturation was very low. The plane then used an oxygen tank for the passenger until the flight landed in Italy an hour later. The passenger got off with the help of medical staff airplane.”
Speaking about the blood oxygen feature on the Apple Watch, Dr. Riaz said: “During this flight, I learned a lot on my own how to use this gadget. It was a lesson in how to use this gadget with a basic tool that is so easily available these days. Gadgets to handle such emergencies, thereby improving the flight journey.” “In an emergency, these things can save a person's life,” he added.
Previously, Apple’s Apple Watch 9 series was banned from sale in the United States due to infringement of Masimo’s pulse oximeter patent.
