[ Gearbest Technology News]Recently, the white paper “Studio Display XDR Technology Overview” released by Apple disclosed two important technical updates for the professional display field: an upcoming “Full Calibration” function and a new set of color measurement models “Apple CMF 2026”.
According to filing information, a future macOS update will introduce full calibration capabilities to Studio Display XDR. This feature allows users to use professional measurement equipment to recalibrate key characteristics of the monitor. According to Apple, when used with a compatible spectroradiometer, the full calibration feature can adjust the display’s white point, primary color coordinates, brightness and gamma response. This feature is designed to meet the needs of professional color workflows by performing hardware-level recalibration of the monitor to maintain the color accuracy of the device over time or to adapt it to specific production environment standards. Currently, each Studio Display XDR is individually calibrated and preset with a series of reference modes for universal color standards when it leaves the factory.
The white paper also announced the Apple CMF 2026 system independently developed by Apple. The system is designed to improve the way monitors are measured and calibrated. Currently, most monitor calibrations rely on the CIE 1931 standard color matching function that has been used for nearly a century. This model is based on early visual experiments and is used to simulate the human eye's perception of color. Apple pointed out that the CIE 1931 model has certain limitations, which may cause subtle differences in visual perception even if the displays are calibrated to the same standard. Apple claims that Apple CMF 2026 can effectively improve visual consistency by more accurately matching the way the human eye perceives color.
Each Studio Display XDR is individually calibrated at the factory using the Apple CMF 2026 standard. At the same time, in order to maintain compatibility with existing professional workflows, Apple continues to support the traditional CIE 1931 system in the reference preset of the monitor. Apple also stated that it is cooperating with the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) and is committed to promoting the establishment of broader industry standards based on this research results, with a view to achieving better color consistency between displays produced by different manufacturers in the future. Studio Display XDR is the first Apple display to support Apple CMF 2026.
