Apple MacBook shipments fell 44% year-on-year in the first quarter

Laptop shipments in the first quarter of 2023 were 43.2 million units, the lowest since the first quarter of 2020. Gearbest learned that Apple's situation was the worst compared with the same period last year, with MacBook shipments falling by about 44%.

According to Apple's second quarter financial report for fiscal year 2023, MacBook revenue was US$7.168 billion, a decrease of 31% from a year ago.

Gearbest noted that this situation is not something that has only occurred in the past two years. As early as 2018, Apple's PC sales in the second quarter fell 13% year-on-year. At the same time, according to the 2018 Q2 Global Personal Computer Market Report released by IDC, global PC sales in that quarter grew 2.6%, the best performance in the past six years.

There is another reason that may explain why Apple's MacBook shipments have dropped so much. In early 2023, there was no particularly obvious difference in performance between the M2-powered MacBook series launched by Apple and the previously launched M1-powered MacBook series, but the price difference was nearly 2,000 yuan. This also led to users who had previously purchased M1 models not having much desire to replace them, and the 10,000 yuan PC discouraged potential users from consuming. There is no doubt that the pressure on the traditional PC market is increasing, and even Apple needs to respond actively.

It is worth noting that not only Apple’s PC shipments have declined, but all brands have seen declines to varying degrees.
