Apple MacBook Air OLED is expected to debut in 2028 and be released in 2029 at the latest

[ Gearbest Technology News]Recently, foreign media reported that Apple is planning to introduce OLED displays to the MacBook Air product line, but fans may need to be patient because this highly anticipated notebook is still several years away from release and will be later than the MacBook Pro using the same screen technology.

Apple MacBook Air OLED is expected to debut in 2028 and be released in 2029 at the latest

According to Bloomberg, we won’t see a MacBook Air equipped with an OLED screen until 2028 at the earliest. The main reason is that large-size, high-quality OLED displays are expensive, and it will take some time for technology costs to drop enough to be used in Apple's mid-range devices.

Apple has taken the lead in introducing OLED screens on the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models in 2024, marking the first time Apple has used this technology on larger devices. While iPhones and Apple Watches have used OLED technology for years, applying the technology to larger displays has been more complicated. Apple's long-term goal is to fully transition to OLED on its flagship Macs and iPads, and eventually achieve full product coverage.

OLED technology offers higher contrast, richer colors, and deeper blacks than the LCD and mini-LED displays currently used on Macs. At the same time, OLED also supports wider viewing angles and is generally more power-efficient because black pixels do not emit light.

Currently, rumors about the new MacBook Pro are more specific. An OLED MacBook Pro with a touch screen is under development and is expected to be available as early as the end of 2026. However, the latest view of well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is more conservative. He believes that we may need to wait until early 2027 to see this product.

Ming-Chi Kuo also confirmed that the release window for the OLED MacBook Air will be in 2028 or 2029. This means that, until this date, the MacBook Air will most likely continue to use LCD display technology. Although it is theoretically possible that Apple will conduct a transitional update of mini-LED technology on Air during this period, there are currently no relevant rumors to confirm this.
