Apple expects OLED iPad Pro sales to be lower than expected or too expensive

According to a report by Trendforce citing the Korea Daily, Apple has reduced orders for OLED display panels designed for the next generation iPad Pro by 20% to 30%. Apple’s initial order of 10 million panels was divided between LG Display (6 million units) and Samsung (4 million units). The cuts are expected to mainly affect LG's orders, which are reduced to three to four million units, while Samsung's orders remain unchanged. It also suggests that it's mainly the 13-inch iPad Pro that will be affected by Apple's expected sales decline, as Samsung exclusively supplies panels for the 11.1-inch model.

The cutback in orders suggests Apple now plans to sell fewer new iPad Pro models than initially expected. According to previous analysis, the addition of OLED panels will make the iPad Pro more expensive. According to previous rumors, the starting price of the 11-inch OLED iPad Pro is US$1,500, while the starting price of the 13-inch model is as high as US$1,800. Currently, the 11-inch iPad Pro starts at $799, while the 12.9-inch model with a mini-LED display starts at $1,099. The higher price of OLED may be one of the reasons why Apple expects sales to decline.

The latest indications are that a new iPad Pro model will be launched in March or April, with the new tablet offering a larger screen, M3 chip, MagSafe charging, and support for the redesigned Magic Keyboard accessory.
