Apple cancels 512GB memory version of Mac Studio due to memory shortage

Currently, the maximum memory configuration of Mac Studio equipped with M3 Ultra chip has been reduced from the original 512GB to 256GB.

Previously, Mac Studio started with 36GB of memory and provided a variety of upgrade options ranging from 48GB to 512GB. The large memory version was limited to the M3 Ultra chip model. Now, the user-selectable memory range is adjusted from 48GB to 256GB. According to Apple’s official website, the estimated delivery time for models with 256GB memory upgrade has been extended to May.

At the same time, Apple also increased the price of the 256GB memory upgrade. On the top-of-the-line M3 Ultra model, upgrading from 96GB to 256GB now costs $2,000, compared with the previous $1,600 option. The upgrade price for the original 512GB memory is $4,000.

Analysts believe that the main reason why Apple adjusted and ultimately canceled the 512GB memory option was the global DRAM shortage. This shortage has led to reduced supply and soaring prices, directly affecting Apple's procurement costs and supply capabilities. This also explains why the Mac Studio with 256GB memory configuration now needs to wait until May to ship.
