European mobile phone sales rankings released! Xiaomi ranks in the top three, Honor is on the list for the first time

On February 22, the latest report released by data analysis agency Canalys showed that in the fourth quarter of 2023, smartphone shipments in Europe (excluding Russia) were 37.8 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 3%. Apple reversed the situation of being behind Samsung for seven consecutive quarters and regained its leading position, with shipments of 12.4 million units, a year-on-year increase of 1%.

Xiaomi's sales fell 10% to 6 million units in the fourth quarter, but it still maintained its third position, thanks to its strong momentum in Central and Eastern Europe. Motorola and Honor ranked fourth and fifth respectively. Motorola's shipments were 2 million units, a year-on-year surge of 73%, while Honor's shipments were 1.1 million units, a year-on-year increase of 116%.

“In the fourth quarter of 2023, premium smartphones achieved a record high market share in Europe. Nearly 40% of smartphones shipped were priced at $800 and above,” said Canalys analyst Runar Bjrhovde.

Looking at the whole year of 2023, Samsung is the largest manufacturer with shipments of 43.7 million units. Apple ranks second with shipments of 34.6 million units; Xiaomi ranks third, Motorola ranks fourth, and OPPO surpasses Honor to rank fifth.

Canalys research analyst Brandon Gurney said: “Beyond the top three, the vendor landscape in 2023 has changed dramatically. Strong growth in a few vendors offset the overall market decline. Motorola is the strongest growing vendor in 2023. It focuses on targeted acquisitions of mobile network operators across the region to achieve continued growth throughout the year. Honor followed Motorola and entered the top five in the European market for the first time in the fourth quarter. This is a key milestone in demonstrating its market potential as it moves towards an initial public offering (IPO).”

Gurney added: “Competition has been fierce over the past few years, but it will intensify further in 2024. Oppo, vivo and realme aim to regain market share after resolving their patent dispute with Nokia. HMD will strive to improve its market position through its recently launched own sub-brand, especially targeting European consumers and channel partners. In addition, the expanding brand footprint of Nothing and Transsion will further drive competition, providing consumers with a wide range of high-quality products to choose from in the coming years.”
