Microsoft launches cloud driver rollback feature for Windows to fix erroneous driver updates

[ Gearbest Technology News]According to foreign media reports, Microsoft plans to introduce a new feature called Cloud Initiated Driver Recovery (CIDR) to Windows systems, which is designed to automatically roll back problematic drivers distributed through Windows Update to reduce system crashes and performance issues caused by updates. This feature is expected to be officially launched in September 2026 and does not require manual intervention from users or hardware manufacturers.

Currently, problematic driver updates often cause system downtime for long periods of time. Users need to wait for hardware partners to submit corrected versions, or manually uninstall the problematic driver. CIDR functionality will change this. Microsoft said in a blog post that the mechanism leverages existing infrastructure to identify problematic software during an internal evaluation process at its hardware development centers. Once the number of crashes exceeds a critical threshold, instructions will be sent to affected devices through the regular update channel to remove the problematic code.

The operating system will then automatically install the most recently available good version or the next best approved version of the driver. If an approved replacement driver is not found locally or online, the system aborts the recovery attempt. The entire process does not require users to install additional programs on their computers.

The introduction of CIDR is in line with Microsoft's current strategy of focusing more on improving the stability of Windows systems rather than simply integrating new features or artificial intelligence. The rollback feature will first undergo a manual testing phase from May to August 2026, before being fully available to all users in the fall.

It should be noted that this feature only applies to drivers distributed through Windows Update's own infrastructure. Drivers that users manually download from the Internet or install through third-party tools, especially drivers for specific gaming hardware or niche peripherals, will not be covered by CIDR and will still need to be manually repaired by users.
