Samsung has raised the ex-factory prices of some laptops and tablets starting from April 7. Companies such as Daewoo Lukoms and TG Sanbao also raised the prices of desktop products for government procurement by 20-30% at the beginning of this year.
Recently, the global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) has expanded, resulting in a shortage of memory supply. According to data from market research company Counterpoint Research, the prices of general DRAM and NAND flash memory surged by 80-90% in the first quarter of this year from the previous quarter. Semiconductor manufacturers have concentrated their production lines on AI-specific products with higher profit margins, causing the supply of general-purpose memory for consumer PCs, tablets and game consoles to plummet to less than half of previous years, further fueling price increases.
Industry insiders said: “Due to the skyrocketing price of memory, manufacturers have to increase product prices.” They also predicted that “there is still room for memory price increases in the future, and product prices are expected to increase further.”
