Former Microsoft executive comments on MacBook Neo: Microsoft once held all the puzzle pieces

[ Gearbest Technology News]On March 13, according to foreign media reports, Microsoft’s former Windows President Steven Sinofsky, who joined Microsoft in 1989 and resigned in 2012, admitted in a blog that using MacBook Neo made him re-examine his failed attempts in the Windows 8 era. The conclusion is full of regrets: Microsoft had all the puzzle pieces, but failed to put together a similar product.

Former Microsoft executive comments on MacBook Neo: Microsoft once held all the puzzle pieces

Sinofsky recalled that in the past decade or so, he often blamed the failure of Windows 8 on “being too ahead of its time.” But the MacBook Neo swayed him. “We had all the puzzles, and they all worked. Our device was only $599 (with keyboard), and the world was more than capable of running something like this.”

He believes that Microsoft's mistake is “failing to push the ecosystem towards new application models that are more secure and power-saving quickly enough.” From the day it announced its support for ARM, Microsoft was determined to separate it from the x86 world, with the goal of “replacing rather than being an alternative.” But the reality is that Windows must carry the burden of near-permanent backward compatibility, leaving ARM devices ultimately stuck in a quagmire of lack of native applications.

Apple's success lies precisely in comparison. Sinofsky pointed out that Apple has guided developers to adopt new APIs and frameworks for decades, making the transition to ARM smooth. Microsoft, however, is bound by its compatibility commitments and cannot shake off its historical baggage as decisively as Apple.

“If you need or desire better performance, Apple has higher-end notebooks and desktops, as well as iPads to choose from,” he wrote. “The MacBook Neo in five years will have performance that exceeds that of most high-end computers today, and the price may still be $699. Moore's Law has not yet failed.”
