[ Gearbest Technology News]Recently, foreign media reported that based on code clues in Apple’s internal documents, Apple is developing two new Studio Displays with different specifications. The code is likely derived from a macOS Tahoe kernel debugging toolkit that was leaked last year. The report pointed out that both new models are expected to support ProMotion adaptive refresh rate technology, up to 120Hz, and add HDR support to improve brightness and dynamic range, which will make video playback and screen scrolling in daily use smoother.
For a higher-end Studio Display, the report further revealed two previously unrumored potential upgrades, including a better speaker system and a larger number and/or higher specification of interfaces. For comparison, Apple's current Studio Display is equipped with a six-speaker system that supports spatial audio, and the interface provides one Thunderbolt 3 port and three USB-C ports. New high-end monitors are likely to be upgraded to at least one Thunderbolt 5 port to ensure sufficient bandwidth to simultaneously support 5K resolution 120Hz picture output and the connection of external accessories.
In terms of screen size, it is speculated that the high-end model may use a 32-inch screen, while the other one may use a 27-inch screen. It should be emphasized that this is only speculation and does not come from Apple's internal documents. If a 32-inch screen is used, maintaining 5K resolution will not meet the Retina display standard, so the resolution may need to be increased to the 6K level consistent with Apple's high-end Pro Display XDR. At the same time, display industry expert Ross Young has previously stated that at least one new Studio Display will use mini-LED backlight technology. If this is the case, Apple may consider discontinuing the Pro Display XDR, which uses full-array LED backlighting, and switch to the Studio Display with high and low configurations to cover more user needs.
In terms of core performance, the new monitor may be equipped with an A19 or A19 Pro chip to replace the A13 Bionic chip on the current model. This is expected to lead to overall performance improvements, enhanced camera quality, and more built-in features. Based on all rumors, the upgrade points of the new Studio Display may include 120Hz ProMotion high refresh rate, HDR support, mini-LED backlight, upgraded speaker system, Thunderbolt 5 interface, new generation A19 series chip, and possible 32-inch screen option. In terms of exterior design, no major changes are expected.
It is said that Apple plans to release these new Studio Displays in the first half of 2026. The current Studio Display was launched with the first Mac Studio in March 2022, nearly four years ago. Last month, a new Apple display appeared in a regulatory database, suggesting that the update may be imminent.
