Apple may release the M5 chip MacBook Air next week. Guess what the highlights are?

The M5 chip uses the third-generation 3nm process technology and is equipped with up to 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. Its performance is significantly improved compared to the previous generation M4 chip. Among them, multi-threaded CPU performance has been improved by 15%, and GPU performance has been improved by 30%. It is especially optimized for GPU-accelerated AI tasks. Each GPU core integrates a neural network accelerator. The unified memory bandwidth has been increased to 153GB/s, which is nearly 30% higher than that of M4. With the memory configuration starting from 16GB and up to 32GB, it can run local AI models and multi-threaded applications more efficiently.

In terms of gaming and graphics processing, the M5 chip introduces third-generation ray tracing technology, second-generation dynamic cache and enhanced shader cores, which significantly improves the operating efficiency of system-level heavy-load tasks. At the same time, the energy efficiency ratio of the 16-core neural network engine has been further improved, which is expected to extend the battery life of the device. In terms of storage configuration, the new MacBook Air will continue to provide capacity options from 256GB to 2TB.

In terms of design, Apple is not expected to make major adjustments to the MacBook Air. Since the completion of the design innovation of the aluminum metal integrated body and fanless cooling system in 2022, this series has maintained a stable appearance for many years. Although there are rumors that Apple may be the first to adopt OLED screens for the MacBook Pro series in late 2026, the MacBook Air's screen upgrade may have to wait longer. The 2026 MacBook Air will still be available in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, with a Retina LCD display, dual Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports, and the existing speaker, microphone, and camera systems.

In terms of price, the basic MacBook Air is expected to maintain a starting price of US$1,099, but due to tight supply in the DRAM market, memory upgrade options may face price increases.
