In the third quarter, global PC market demand dropped significantly. Total desktop and laptop shipments fell 18% to 69.4 million units as businesses became more cautious in IT spending, exacerbating existing weakness in the consumer and education sectors. Unfavorable macroeconomic and industry factors such as high inflation, rising interest rates, and bulging channel inventories have weakened the momentum of the PC market and are likely to continue into 2023. Laptop shipments were the most affected, falling 19% year-on-year to 547,000 units shipped. Desktop shipments were stronger, down 11% year over year, to a total of 14.7 million units due to less reliance on consumer spending.

In terms of rankings, Lenovo maintained its leading position in the global PC market, but its sales fell 16% year-on-year to 16.9 million units. HP had the largest decline among the top five vendors for the second consecutive quarter, with shipments of 12.7 million units, down 28% year-over-year. Both Lenovo and HP's shipments hit their lowest levels since the outbreak of the epidemic in the first quarter of 2020.
Third-ranked Dell also saw a sharp 21% decline in shipments, shipping just under 12 million units; Apple's quarterly results were better than those of its rivals as it completed second-quarter orders delayed by supply disruptions and launched new M2 Macbooks. It ranked fourth with 8 million units shipped, a year-on-year increase of 2%; Asus ranked in the top five with 5.5 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 8%.
