As early as November 2024, an anonymous listener revealed on the technology podcast “Upgrade” that Apple was developing 90Hz display technology, which may be used in new generation Studio Display, iPad Air and iMac products in the future. Although a higher refresh rate can improve the smoothness of video playback and scrolling operations, there is still a gap between 90Hz and the 120Hz supported by Apple's ProMotion technology. Currently, the refresh rates of Apple's existing devices are mainly concentrated in two gears: 60Hz or 120Hz.
Recently, a whistleblower on the MacRumors website pointed out based on the leaked iOS 26 internal test version code analysis that the refresh rate limit of the new generation Studio Display is likely to be locked at 90Hz. The tipster believes that this choice may be related to bandwidth allocation – although the Thunderbolt 5 interface supports 120Hz lossless transmission at 5K resolution, Apple may want to reserve more bandwidth for connecting peripherals. The Studio Display currently on sale has a refresh rate of 60Hz.
According to the latest news from Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple has determined to release a new Studio Display in the first half of 2026. Previously, an unreleased Apple display model number A3350 appeared in China’s regulatory database, and the industry generally speculated that it was Studio Display 2.
According to various rumors, the new display may be equipped with mini-LED backlight technology, support HDR display, and be equipped with an A19 or A19 Pro chip to enhance image processing capabilities.
