It is revealed that Samsung has begun mass production of 8.6-generation OLED screens, which will be used in new laptops

[ Gearbest Technology News]Recently, South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo reported that Samsung Display has officially launched mass production of the world’s first 8.6-generation OLED panel production line, and held a shipping ceremony and safety prayer event at its Asan factory in Chungcheongnam-do on the same day. It is reported that the company has delivered the first batch of verified and high-yield samples to customers for a fee. These panels will be installed in new notebook computers launched in 2026, marking the entry of OLED for IT into a new stage of high-generation mass production.

Compared with the mainstream 6th generation OLED production line, the 8.6th generation line uses a 2290 mm × 2620 mm glass substrate, which is approximately 2.2 times larger in area, significantly improving the cutting efficiency of large-size panels and effectively reducing unit costs. Samsung Display President Li Qing said during CES 2026: “It is crucial to successfully operate the 8.6-generation production line. If it goes smoothly, the company's IT product sales are expected to increase by 20% to 30% year-on-year.”

This production line was transformed from the original LCD L8 production line, with a total investment of 4.1 trillion won. It will be the first to announce the construction plan in 2023, start trial operation in mid-2024, and start sample shipments at the end of the year, leading the industry in progress. The market generally expects that its first batch of products will be supplied to Apple’s upcoming OLED version of MacBook, further promoting the transformation of high-end IT equipment to OLED.

At the same time, global panel manufacturers are accelerating their deployment on the 8.6-generation OLED track. BOE announced in 2023 that it would invest 63 billion yuan in Chengdu to build an 8.6-generation line with a monthly production capacity of 32,000 pieces; Visionox and TCL CSOT have also successively promoted similar projects. In contrast, LG Display has not yet announced relevant investment plans.
