DRAM market blowout! Q2 revenue exceeded US$31.3 billion, the highest growth rate in two years

[ Gearbest Technology News]According to Gearbest, in the second quarter of 2025, globalDRAM shipments grew at the largest rate in two years. As the artificial intelligence (AI) market booms, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) has become a core competitiveness factor, driving SK hynix to achieve overwhelming performance and dominate the market.

According to data disclosed by market research firm TechInsights, global DRAM shipments reached 76.1 exabytes (Eb) in the second quarter of this year, an increase of 16.6% from the previous quarter, setting the highest growth rate since the second quarter of 2023. One exabyte is equivalent to approximately 1 billion gigabytes (GB), and 76.1 exabytes is enough to store more than 590 billion 1.5GB movies.

The increase in shipments directly drives the expansion of sales. Total DRAM revenue in the second quarter reached US$31.3 billion, an increase of 17.2% from the previous quarter. The average selling price (ASP) per gigabit edged up 0.6% to US$0.41, driving the industry's overall operating profit margin to increase by 1 percentage point month-on-month to 38%.

However, the performance of various companies differs due to HBM technology. Among them, SK hynix has consolidated its dominance by relying on its HBM market leadership position, maintaining the first place in the world with revenue of US$12.2 billion and operating profit of US$6.8 billion. Its overwhelming profits confirm that HBM is the most critical differentiating factor in the DRAM market. Samsung Electronics' revenue was US$10.1 billion, Micron's revenue was US$7 billion, China's Changxin Memory (CXMT) and Taiwan's Nanya recorded revenue of US$1.3 billion and US$300 million respectively.

Judging from the trend, the DRAM market competition will further intensify around HBM4 (sixth generation) in the second half of the year. TechInsights predicts that as the demand for AI servers grows, HBM demand will continue to rise. After SK Hynix dominates the HBM3 (fourth generation) and HBM3E (fifth generation) markets, Samsung Electronics and Micron are entering the market in an all-round way, forming a three-strong competition for HBM.
