Apple may adjust its OLED product roadmap due to weak sales of OLED version iPad Pro

Apple launched the OLED version of iPad Pro last year, introducing a double-layer tandem display technology and a hybrid OLED structure, achieving a breakthrough in reducing weight by 15% and reducing thickness by 22% compared with the previous generation Mini-LED models. However, the high selling price hindered market acceptance and prevented it from becoming a best-selling product.

Data shows that at the beginning of 2024, Samsung Display and LG Display planned to supply more than 9 million OLED panels, but the final shipment volume was only about 5.7 million yuan. Apple’s target shipment of iPad Pro to suppliers at the beginning of the year was about 6 million units, but since January 2025, Apple has begun to cut OLED panel procurement, and it is expected that the panel demand for OLED iPad Pro will be adjusted to 5-5.5 million yuan in 2025, lower than previous expectations. What is more noteworthy is that this year’s OLED iPad Pro hardware specifications are exactly the same as last year, and there are no upgrades, including display technology, and lack sufficient market appeal. This trend further exacerbates the market’s pessimistic expectations of its demand.

Faced with the current market performance, Apple has reported that it has readjusted the iteration plan of OLED products.

On the iPad series, the OLED version of the iPad mini is still planned to be launched in 2026, and the OLED version of the iPad Air will be advanced to 2027 (originally scheduled for 2028). The OLED upgrade version of the iPad Pro has been postponed to 2028 and is expected to become Apple’s first tablet product to adopt COE packaging technology. The foldable iPad is expected to be launched after 2028 and will use a dual-layer tandem display technology and COE package like the new generation of iPad Pro to improve display durability and energy efficiency.

On the MacBook series, the OLED version of MacBook Pro is expected to be launched by the end of 2026, using the 8th generation IT OLED panel of Samsung Display, combined with hybrid OLED structure, double-layer tandem display technology and oxide TFT. The OLED version of the MacBook Air is postponed to after 2028. To reduce costs, the model will use a hybrid OLED structure, but only a single-layer OLED, which is different from the Pro series’ double-layer tandem technology.

Although weak sales of OLED iPad Pro in the short term have caused market concerns, Apple is still firmly advancing the process of OLEDization, and it is expected that by 2028-2029, all iPad and MacBook products will use OLED panels. In addition, the launch of folding screen products may also bring new opportunities to Apple’s OLED strategy.
