Apple launches M3 Ultra chip to support 512GB of memory and launches new Mac Studio

Apple calls the M3 Ultra the most powerful Mac chip to date, achieving major breakthroughs in computing, graphics processing and AI performance.

Apple said that the M3 Ultra is essentially composed of two M3 Max chips through its UltraFusion technology, so the various parameters of the M3 Ultra are almost doubled compared to the M3 Max. There have been rumors that the M3 Max may not have UltraFusion interconnect capabilities, but this official release of Apple directly shattered the rumor.

UltraFusion technology adopts an embedded silicon interposer, allowing more than 10,000 signal connections between two M3 Max chips, providing an ultra-low latency interconnect bandwidth of 2.5TB/s, making it appear as a complete chip at the software level. The M3 Ultra chip is equipped with up to 32 core CPUs, including 24 high-performance cores and 8 high-efficiency cores, which further enhance the computing power compared to previous generation chips. Apple says the M3 Ultra’s CPU performance is 1.5 times faster than the M2 Ultra and 1.8 times faster than the M1 Ultra.

In terms of graphics processing, the M3 Ultra supports up to 80 cores GPUs, bringing amazing graphics performance improvements. Apple says its graphics rendering speed is 2 times faster than the M2 Ultra and 2.6 times faster than the M1 Ultra, and it can smoothly deal with professional-level video editing, 3D modeling and AI computing tasks. In addition, the M3 Ultra is also equipped with a 32-core neural engine, which further improves AI computing capabilities and supports up to 512GB of unified memory, with a memory bandwidth of up to 819GB/s, greatly improving data processing speed.

Similar to the M4 Pro and M4 Max, the M3 Ultra also supports Thunderbolt 5. On Macs equipped with Thunderbolt 5 ports, the data transmission rate can reach up to 120GB/s, bringing a faster data interaction experience to professional users. Apple emphasized that the M3 Ultra chip not only has industry-leading computing performance, but also has the best energy efficiency ratio among products of the same level, providing extreme performance while maintaining excellent power consumption control.
