The online share of laptops from major international brands, such as HP, has seen a significant decline in the Chinese market, dropping to just 15.7%. This shift highlights a key trend in China’s rapidly evolving laptop market, where local brands are gaining momentum and positioning themselves for long-term growth.
In a report released on October 9, Runto Luotu Technology analyzed several trends in the development of China’s laptop market in 2024. One key observation is the increasingly reserved stance of international brands in the Chinese market, a factor that has created an opportunity for domestic brands to thrive.
International Brands Lose Ground in China’s Laptop Market
Global laptop brands like HP, Dell, Apple, and Microsoft have long dominated the laptop market worldwide. In China, Lenovo has held a strong position, with other local brands lagging behind. But now, China’s advanced manufacturing infrastructure and technological progress have begun to change the balance.
Runto Luotu Technology points out that China manufactures about 90% of the world’s laptops. This gives local brands a solid foundation for growth. Recent advancements in chip design and operating systems have enabled these brands to invest heavily and expand their market share.
How Local Brands Are Gaining Ground
The competitive landscape in China’s laptop market has become increasingly fierce, with international brands scaling back their investments in the region. Faced with growing competition and a reluctance to engage in price wars, companies like HP, Dell, and Apple have been cautious about their future prospects in China. This has led to a reduction in investments and employee layoffs in some cases, further opening the door for local brands to seize new opportunities.
Despite this, local Chinese laptop brands, including Huawei, Mechanical Revolution, Xiaomi, Honor, Shenzhou, and Colorful, have shown tremendous growth potential. As of the third quarter of 2024, the combined sales share of these brands remained steady at approximately 25%, positioning them as significant competitors in the market after Lenovo and Asus.
The Future of China’s Laptop Market
Looking ahead, China’s laptop market will likely favor local brands even more as international companies scale back. Local brands have the manufacturing capabilities and the technology to continue growing.
As international brands rethink their strategies, local Chinese brands are poised to lead the future of China’s laptop industry.
