Microsoft’s “Fingerprint Power Button Integration” Patent Reveals Surface Laptop May Be Equipped

The technology is likely to be available on Microsoft Surface laptops soon.

Gearbest has learned that Microsoft is working on a method to authenticate users by integrating a fingerprint reader into the power button. The company recently patented this technology and explained it in a paper titled ‘Power Key and Fingerprint Reader.’ The technology enables devices to authenticate users by scanning their fingerprints through the power button. This fingerprint power button integration offers a convenient and secure method of authentication for users. For more details on tech innovations, visit Gearbest Blog.

Reports indicate that the power button-fingerprint sensor integration activates the fingerprint sensor whenever the user presses the power button. The button’s integrated fingerprint reader turns on, and a light (visual indicator) on the power button illuminates, signaling that the fingerprint reader is ready for use.

When the fingerprint reader is active, the power button temporarily disables its usual standby function, which would typically put the device to sleep or wake it up. This means that the power button is now unable to perform its normal function.

Verifying identity is as simple as with any other fingerprint reader. The user places their finger on the reader, and it scans the fingerprint. The device uses this fingerprint scan to verify identity. Authenticated (logged in or granted access) if the fingerprint matches the one stored on the device.

Once authenticated, the light on the power button turns off. The normal standby function of the power button is restored, allowing it to be used as usual again.

This method activates the fingerprint reader only when needed. It also provides visual feedback to the user and ensures the power button works after authentication. The design aims to enhance security while maintaining convenience.

Foreign media reports that this technology will greatly improve device security, especially for laptops. If a device is lost or stolen, the fingerprint-enabled power button will prevent unauthorized access. The technology is likely to be available on Microsoft Surface laptops soon.
